The Ford F-150 Lightning Pickup Truck

If you appreciate having a pickup truck that’ll save you money on fuel, consider the Ford F-150 Lightning. This all-electric pickup truck from Ford has all the performance, capability, and technology features Ford gives its F-150 trucks, except instead of using gasoline, you charge the truck up at home or a charging station. Let’s explore the various features of the F-150 Lightning so you can see what an all-electric pickup truck of the future looks like today.

Exterior Dimensions and Trims

You’ll notice that the F-150 Lightning looks very similar to its cousin, the gas-powered F-150. Unlike other EVs on the market, Ford designed the Lightning to look like most of its F-150 lineup. This handsome truck comes in five trim levels: the Pro, XLT, Lariat, Platinum, and the new limited-edition Platinum Black trim that debuts in 2024. Each trim comes with a crew cab with a 5-foot, 5-inch bed and a wheelbase of 14.5 inches, making it easy to maneuver over obstacles and through city traffic.

Power and Performance

Dual electric motors and all-wheel drive come standard across the F-150 Lightning lineup, with two battery packs to choose from. With a 98 kWh standard range battery pack, this all-electric pickup truck gets an impressive 452 horsepower and 775 lb-ft of torque. Choose the 131 kW extended-range battery pack, and you’ll get an impressive 580 horsepower. You can tow up to 7,700 pounds with the standard-range battery pack and up to 10,000 pounds with the extended-range version when properly equipped.

Driving Range and Charging Times

You can get up to 230 miles of driving time with the standard battery pack and up to 320 miles with the extended-range battery pack. At home, you can charge your F-150 Lightning using either Ford’s charging station system or the mobile cord 240-volt charging system.

When you’re driving out and about, you can charge the F-150 Lightning using the BlueOval Charge Network that allows you to charge the battery pack at over 88,000 charging stations across North America. In addition, you can get a quick charge at any of the 10,200 BlueOval Charge Network DC fast chargers across North America.

Interior Features and Technology

While rugged and capable on the outside, the inside of the F-150 Lightning is roomy, luxurious, and contemporary. Up to five people can ride in comfort on leather seating found on all but the Pro trim. Luxury features include heated front and rear seats.

The two lower trims come with Ford’s infotainment system featuring a 12-inch touch screen, and as you move up the tiers, you’ll get a 15.5-inch touch screen. This system comes standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, household-style power outlets, a wireless charging pad, and an eight- or 15-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system.

Safety Features

With a truck as powerful as the F-150 Lightning, you’ll appreciate the safety features Ford equips this pickup truck with. Key driver-assist features include forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and a lane mitigation system. Additional safety features include a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert and rear parking sensors. You can even get Ford’s BlueCruise semi-autonomous driving feature on the Lariat and Platinum trims.
