2023 Ford Explorer vs. 2023 Kia Telluride: Powertrain
Ford makes the Explorer with one of three engines, depending on your chosen model. The Explorer Base, XLT, ST-Line, Timberline, and Limited models have a 2.3-liter inline four-cylinder EcoBoost turbocharged engine paired with a ten-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain produces 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. You can also tow up to 5,300 pounds when you install the Class IV Trailer Tow package.
A 3.0-liter V-6 EcoBoost turbo engine with a ten-speed automatic transmission comes standard in the ST, King Ranch, and Platinum models. As a result, this power plant puts out an impressive 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque. It also has a maximum towing capacity of 5,600 pounds.
Limited Hybrid and Platinum Hybrid trims use a 3.3-liter V-6 hybrid engine mated to the same automatic transmission. This engine conserves fuel while producing 318 horsepower and 322 lb-ft of torque. Plus, this powertrain can tow up to 5,000 pounds when properly equipped.
Kia makes the Telluride with a 3.8-liter V-6 engine. It’s combined with an eight-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain produces 291 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. While most Kia Telluride trims can tow 5,000 pounds, the two X-Pro models can tow up to 5,500 pounds.
Edge: Ford Explorer
Ford’s three engines all produce more horsepower and torque. The EcoBoost engines also deliver more towing and better efficiency. This gives the Explorer powertrain a clear advantage.
2023 Ford Explorer vs. 2023 Kia Telluride: Performance
Ford makes the Explorer with a capable rear-wheel-drive platform. Suppose you need added control during off-road excursions. Or, you may need improved traction in varying weather conditions. You can add the Explorer’s Intelligent four-wheel-drive (4WD) system in these cases. And you have Ford’s Terrain Management system with seven selectable drive modes.
You select Normal for your everyday commute or Trail when you leave the pavement behind. A Deep Snow/Sand mode on the 4WD models delivers better traction when the surface gets deep and soft. The Slippery mode helps when the wet weather rolls in. Dialing in your steering, suspension, and throttle is the Slippery mode, ensuring a more spirited drive.
Explorer drivers can select the Tow/Haul mode when they need more control towing heavy loads. Finally, you have the Eco mode. It dials back your Explorer’s output for improved efficiency on long trips. Ford also includes its Hill Descent Control and Trailer Sway Control systems. They provide better handling of your Explorer and its load.
Kia uses a front-wheel-drive (FWD) platform that comes standard on every trim. There’s also an all-wheel-drive (AWD) system available as an upgrade. You also have selectable drive modes for Comfort, Eco, Sport, and Smart on FWD models. AWD models add Snow and AWD Lock modes. Many of these modes operate the same as those offered by Ford.
Edge: Ford Explorer
Ford’s rear-wheel-drive system is the most significant difference from Kia’s FWD platform. Rear-driving cars offer sportier driving dynamics.
2023 Ford Explorer vs. 2023 Kia Telluride: Exterior Style
Every Explorer has a bold exterior style with a wide stance and aggressive features. However, you have the Timberline trim that comes equipped for off-road adventures. Or, you can choose the Explorer ST-Line or ST models with street-smart design elements. Then there’s the King Ranch trim that offers a signature midwestern style. Do you want premium amenities instead? If so, the Platinum has luxury features guaranteed to turn heads on any boulevard.
A power liftgate comes standard on every Explorer. Depending on your trim, you can choose 18- or 20-inch wheels in various colors and styles. For example, the Timberline trim features aggressive all-terrain tires on the 18-inch alloy rims. Or, you may prefer the Platinum model, which uses all-season tires on chrome-finished 20-inch wheels.
Telluride models have modern design elements that look great around town. However, they lack the aggressive features expected from a vehicle that ventures off-road. You also have alloy wheels in various sizes and styles, and the X-Pro trims come with all-terrain tires.
Edge: Ford Explorer
The Explorer has a longer, wider wheelbase with a little more aggressive style. Add the trim-exclusive options, and you have more options to suit particular tastes.
