2024 Ford F-150 Lightning Towing Capacity

November 28th, 2023 by

If you’re interested in owning an all-electric pickup truck with a superb towing capability, consider the 2024 Ford F-150 Lightning. This all-electric version of the popular gas-powered F-150 has been on the market since 2021. If you enjoy off-roading, are looking for a fuel-efficient work truck, or want a pickup truck with impressive towing capabilities, you should embrace the F-150 Lightning.

Find the Right Vehicle For Your Towing Needs

Whether you plan on towing a boat to the lake, a camping trailer for backcountry adventures, or supplies to the job site, it’s important to have a pickup truck that has the towing capacity to suit your needs. In addition, you need to have a truck that comes with a towing package and towing equipment to get the maximum amount for your hauling needs. Because of the massive amount of torque that the F-150 Lightning has, and with the extended-range battery and towing equipment, this all-electric pickup truck’s towing capacity is similar to or better than gas-powered pickup trucks.

Exterior Features and Trim Levels

Ford offers the F-150 Lightning in five trims: the Pro, XLT, Lariat, and the top-tier Platinum. All trims come as a four-door crew cab complete with a sturdy 5-foot 5-inch all-steel bed to carry gear and supplies. You’ll notice how handsomely styled the F-150 Lightning is with the rugged looks all F-150 models come with. The 2024 Lighting has a wheelbase of 145.5 inches, making it ideal for parking in tight spots, maneuvering through traffic, and clearing obstacles on backcountry trails.

Power and Performance

From what we know so far, Ford equips the 2024 F-150 Lightning with two battery packs paired with dual electric motors. The standard-range 98 kWh battery pack paired with the two motors produces 452 horsepower and a massive 775 lb-ft of torque. Choose the 131 kWh extended-range battery pack paired with the two motors, and the horsepower jumps to 580.

The latter battery pack is available on the XLT and Lariat trim and comes standard on the top-tier Platinum trim. These impressive horsepower and torque numbers give the F-150 Lightning enough power to tow large loads. All-wheel drive comes standard across the lineup, helping with traction when towing or driving on slippery roads.

Towing Capacity and Towing Features

The F-150 Lightning can tow up to 7,700 pounds when you have the standard-range battery pack and up to 10,000 pounds with the extended-range battery pack. The maximum payload capacity for the Lightning comes in at 2,235 pounds.

If you compare the high towing number with the electric Silverado EV, you’ll see that it can also tow up to 10,000 pounds but only has a payload capacity of 1,400 pounds. The Ford F-150 Lightning beats out the GMC Sierra Electric with its 9,500-pound towing capacity with an approximate 1,300-pound payload capacity. With big towing and payload capacity numbers, the F-150 Lightning gets the job done.

You’ll need the Max Trailer Tow Package and the Tow Technology Package to get the maximum towing capability. The Tow Technology Package comes with:

  • Pro Trailer Backup Assist.
  • Trailer Brake Controller.
  • Smart Hitch.
  • On-Board Scales.
  • Smart Trailer Tow Connection.
  • Trailer Reverse Guidance.

Driving Range and Charging Times

According to Car and Driver, the 2024 F-150 Lightning offers about 230 miles driving range with the standard-range 98 kWh battery pack and up to 320 miles with the 131 kWh extended-range battery pack. You’ll want to factor in which trim level of the 2024 F-150 Lightning to choose based on the distance you want to drive between charging times.

When you have the Ford Charge Station Pro in-home-charging outlet, Ford estimates you can charge your F-150 Lightning from 15% to 100% in about eight hours. With the mobile power cord with its 240-volt connector, it’ll take about 23 hours to fully charge the extended-range battery pack from 15% to 100%. In addition, if your home has the right equipment, you can use the F-150 Lightning’s Intelligent Backup Power for electricity when the power goes out.

When you’re driving long distances, take advantage of BlueOval Charge Network DC fast chargers, where you can charge your Lightning from about 15% to 80% in about 41 minutes. The BlueOval Charge Network  has over 88,000 chargers throughout North America and over 10,200 DC fast chargers.

Technology Features

Without an engine in the front of the F-150 Lightning, you have room and power in the front trunk. This area comes with four 12-volt outlets to run tools or lights and two USB ports to keep your devices charged. Your F-150 Lightning comes with LED lights across the bumpers and behind the bed of the truck to give you extra illumination when you’re working or entertaining when it’s dark outside.

Inside, you’ll find Ford’s infotainment system with a 12-inch or 15.5-inch touch screen on the Lariat and Platinum trims. The infotainment system has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, an eight- or 18-speaker Bang and Olufsen premier sound system, and power-folding side mirrors and a power-folding rear window.  All the F-150 Lightning trims come with heated front seats, and the upper tiers have a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, a wireless charging pad, and a power-adjustable driver’s seat.

Safety Features

You’ll have peace of mind driving and towing with the F-150 Lightning, as it comes with advanced safety and driver-assist features. Standard features include a forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, a lane-keeping system, and a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert. With the optional 312A High Package, the F-150 Lightning comes with adaptive cruise control and evasive steering assistance. Add the available 511A High Package to your Lariat trim, and you’ll get Ford’s BlueCruise  semi-hands-free driving system.
