How to Program a Ford Key Fob
Ford vehicles often come with a key fob that allows you to remotely perform many of the tasks that a manual key was traditionally used for. These tasks include locking and unlocking your doors and starting your engine.
However, before you can take advantage of these conveniences, you need to program your Ford key fob. This is a relatively simple process that you should be able to complete at home. Our Ford tech experts here at Riverside Ford in Macon, Georgia, have put together some instructions to help you. Feel free to contact us if you’re struggling to get set up.
Instructions for Programming Your Ford Key Fob
To get started, you’ll need to get into your car and close all the doors. Next, open the driver’s door and press its Unlock button. You’ll then need to put your key into the ignition and turn it from Off to Run eight times within 10 seconds. Keep in mind that this process doesn’t require you to start the engine. After you’re on Run for the eighth time, your door locks should lock and unlock to indicate that you’re in program mode. If this doesn’t happen, try performing the process again more quickly.
Once you’re in program mode, all you need to do is press one of the buttons on the key fob that you want to program. Your door locks should cycle from locked to unlocked to confirm that your fob is programmed. If you have a second fob to program, press any button on it within eight seconds to complete the programming process. To finish, turn your key to Off. You should hear your door locks cycling again to confirm that the programming process is complete.
After you’ve finished programming your fobs, you should be able to use them whenever you like. You can adjust and review your key fob’s settings by visiting the MyKey option on the main settings menu of your Ford’s infotainment system.
How To Clear the MyKey Settings
Several situations may call for you to erase your MyKey settings. For example, you may be about to trade in your Ford Explorer or sell your F-150 on the private market. You obviously don’t want other drivers to gain access to your personal settings, so it’s a good idea to clear them.
Luckily, the whole process is comparatively straightforward. Start by turning on your Ford crossover or truck using your main key fob. Once the main system starts up, go to Settings and scroll down to find the MyKey option. Then, you’ll need to select the Clear MyKey option and hold down OK until you see the message, “All MyKeys cleared.” You’re now free to hand over your Ford without putting your personal settings at risk.
What Your Ford Key Fob Can Do for You
Beyond the obvious use of your Ford key fob for opening and locking your doors, there are several tasks you can perform with it. If your Ford crossover or truck has remote start, you’ll be able to start the engine with your key fob from up to 300 feet away.
To do this, press the Lock button to make sure all doors are locked before pressing the Remote Start button twice within three seconds. Your vehicle’s lights should blink on and the engine should rev into motion. When you get into your car, insert your key and turn it to the Start position or use your push-button start feature if it’s available.
Lowering your windows from the outside is another helpful task that can come in useful when ventilating your vehicle during the hot summer months. All you need to do is press the Unlock button twice and then hold it down on the third press. This combination will lower all your windows and open the sunroof if your car has one. To reverse the process, simply tap the Lock button twice and hold it down the third time.
A further trick that the key fob can perform is opening your trunk. Some smart remotes come with a specific button for this purpose. If yours has it, just tap the button twice and your trunk will open up.
Tips for Resolving Ford Key Fob Problems
One of the most common problems you can have with your Ford key fob is that the battery dies. The most effective way to combat this problem is to stick to a regular maintenance schedule, which includes replacing your key fob battery at appropriate intervals.
However, if your battery has already died, you still have several options to get into your car and start the engine. First, you can press the two buttons located at the key chain end to access the fob’s hidden key. Pressing the buttons will elevate the Ford logo on your fob, allowing you to open it to reveal the hidden analog key. Just insert the key as you would a traditional key to unlock your doors.
The alternative is to use your Ford’s SYNC Connect feature, which is available on Ford vehicles after the 2016 model year. To use this feature, you’ll need to have the FordPass app activated on your phone. Once FordPass is running, you can pair your phone to your car and use the FordPass settings to unlock your car. Once you get inside, the FordPass app also allows you to start your vehicle. You can then head on over to our Macon service center to get a new battery installed in your key fob.
As you can see, the Ford key fob is easy to set up and provides a range of convenient features.
